Underground mine<\/span><\/h2>[vc_row_inner gap=”30″][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]The tour takes you to the underground tunnels of “Walert” iron ore mine which were dug between 1891 and 1963. Discover large tunnels on two different levels more than 70m below ground and see the impressive cavities left over by the miners while listening to the lively stories of your guide. The machines and tooling seen underground bears witness to iron ore mining in the entire region from the 1860s to the closure of the last Lorraine mine in 1997. Overground exhibition<\/span><\/h2>[vc_row_inner gap=”30″][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]You can walk around freely on the overground site of the mine. Inside the former engine shed, you will find an exhibition about the history of iron ore mining in Luxembourg. Scattered around the site are the remains of buildings and machines showing the importance of this “emerged” part of the vast mining field.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”538″ img_size=”medium”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#a42b25″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”train” el_class=”scrollto”][vc_column]

Mine train<\/span><\/h2>[vc_row_inner gap=”30″][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]The mine train is the link between the underground and above ground parts of the mine. The train circuit takes you first through the luxuriant green of the former open pit mines and then into the main tunnel, which is about 3km long. The battery locomotive and modern cars were built in 2016 and their large windows give you a glimpse of the mine workings even the miners themselves never had.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”559″ img_size=”medium”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”2″ accent_color=”#a42b25″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_id=”collections” el_class=”scrollto”][vc_column]

Collections<\/span><\/h2>[vc_row_inner gap=”30″][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]The museum has a comprehensive collection of books, documents, tools, machines, ore samples and other objects in relation to mining history from the 1860s to the 1990s. Part of this collection is on exhibit. The archives and reserves can be used by researchers on demand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Former open pit mines<\/span><\/h2>[vc_row_inner gap=”30″][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]Around the museum site several abandoned open pit mines are slowly being reclaimed by nature. On walking and mountain bike trails you can have a closer look at the red rocks of these manmade miniature canyons.<\/span><\/p>\n
